Photography & Digital Imaging

I’ve been taking pictures nearly all my life. I still remember snapping my first photo with my mother’s “Baby Brownie” camera when I was seven. It was of my mother standing hip deep in the snow, measuring its depth with a broom. Ever since then I’ve been intrigued with capturing the fleeting but extraordinary moments that are so often overlooked in the hustle-bustle of daily life—an unusual play of light, a reflection, outdoor views through windows, unusual cloud effects, nature in both grand and minute scale. I think of my approach to photography as “plein-air,” a term originally used to refer to certain French Impressionist painters who painted outdoors rather than in a studio and were principally interested in the effects of outdoor light and atmosphere.

As an art student (Philadelphia College of Art and The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts), I studied the fundamentals of composition and design and the intricacies of working with color. At about the same time I learned to develop black-and-white film and make prints in a darkroom. While I enjoyed the ability to manipulate my monochrome images, I wished to have the same freedom to work with color. But that was possible only for professional photographers and only a few of them, due to high cost and technical limitations. In recent years the development of computer technology and digital photography has reduced cost and brought complete artistic control within reach.

My photography and digital imaging, which I produce as limited edition prints, is available year-round at Ecopelagicon in Rangeley and occasionally at shows and exhibitions.
